Carnival of Souls
Carnival of Souls (1962) — 1 hour 23 minutes
This macabre masterpiece, created with an extremely modest budget, has become a cult classic and continues to inspire filmmakers with its horrific imagery and unrelenting malaise. Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) survives a drag race in a rural Kansas town, then takes a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she becomes haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her to an abandoned lakeside pavilion and a mysteriously abandoned carnival filled with the souls of the dead.
The Andrew Alden Ensemble will accompany this cult-classic with their traditional instrumentation of electric guitar, drum set, synthesizer, piano, violin and viola, along with the techniques of live circuit bending and analog tape looping to create experimental sound effects that will be unique to every performance.
